Individual Therapy for Children

At Spark Psychology, we offer individual therapy to provide strategies for children and young adults seeking support to cope with challenges in their lives.

Individual therapy for children and teenagers is a form of mental health support in which a young person meets one-on-one with the psychologist. The primary goal is to provide a safe, confidential space for the child or teen to express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Sessions are typically tailored to the youth’s age, developmental stage, and unique needs.

How It Works

Individual therapy may use a variety of approaches, including talk therapy, play and sand therapy, art, or cognitive-behavioural techniques. For younger children, sessions might involve games, drawing, or storytelling to help them communicate, while teenagers may engage in more direct conversations about their experiences and challenges.

Common issues addressed:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Behavioural issues
  • Family changes (such as divorce or relocation)
  • Grief and loss
  • School-related stress
  • Friendship and social skills difficulties
  • Self-esteem and identity concerns
  • Trauma or abuse
  • Challenges related to ADHD or ASD

Benefits of Individual Therapy

  • Improved emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Better communication of thoughts and feelings
  • Increased self-awareness and confidence
  • Support for navigating life transitions or challenges
  • Development of problem-solving and social skills

What can I expect?

Therapy often includes discussion of the following:

  • Assessment of your child’s specific needs
  • Personal Coaching and intervention for your child
  • Identification of Goals, Challenges, and Strengths
  • Creating healthy sleep, eating, and exercise routines
  • Awareness of feelings and how to identify them
  • Emotional Regulation Strategies
  • Making a specific plan to take action, and trouble-shooting obstacles to carrying out the plan
  • Parenting Support and Strategies

Your therapist will collaborate with parents and caregivers, and sometimes teachers, while maintaining the child or teen’s privacy, to ensure a holistic approach to care. Sessions are usually weekly or biweekly and can be short-term or ongoing, depending on the individual’s goals and progress.
